Ninja Obstacles

Summer 2023 - Present

These builds stem off from my existing job, Ninja Warrior Coach. I expressed my passion of building and engineering to my boss in August of 2023 and he suggested that I take these talents and apply them to the sport of ninja warrior. The current market for these obstacles is ridiculous as the few companies that make these niche products can charge hundreds of dollars for what is seemingly plywood with basic profiles cut in them. My boss pitched the idea of creating these obstacles in house to the higher ups at Centercourt and  they haven't looked back. Documentation of these projects can be spotty at times, I do have a job to do after all. In addition to these builds I also manage our Instagram account where I post Ninja related content. My  highest performing video is sitting at 22 million views, Instagram page is  linked down below.

The Realization

Make no mistake, I took a risk accepting this position. I would need my builds not only to be functional obstacles but meet safety requirements for them to be used on the Ninja Course.

A good template makes a great obstacle. Spending time on this part is crucial. It feels like the beginnings of a C.A.D project in real life.

At their core, all of these obstacles follow the same design. They are profiles cut out of 3/4 inch plywood which need to be doubled up to have necessary strength.

Aside from a solid plywood base, the most important part of the obstacle are the industrial bearings. This component allows it to be mounted onto any 2 inch pipe. Found everywhere around the gym.

These steps are self explanatory.  Obstacles need to look fun to play on, while also being fun to grab without dealing out splinters. I route down the sharp edges and  sand to 150 grit all around. Then its primer, paint, clearcoat, done.

This obstacle is called the "snapback" and is hanging from a 2 inch bar here. Attached below are videos of these obstacles in action. So far, I have saved Centercourt over 2,000 dollars with my homemade obstacles.
